The update: Andy, Laura, and Luke

October 27

Whew!  We are in the midst of packing and a lot of goodbyes.  People keep coming by the apartment to say goodbye to Luke.  :)  Downstairs, the cooks are preparing a huge feast for tonight's despedida.  On the menu: tamales, fried chicken, baked pork chop, vegetables, beans, french fries, tres leches, vanilla cake, and flan.  Yum!

My parents are here, and they have been doing a marvelous job of entertaining Luke during the day so that I can pack away to my heart's content.  We have tomorrow to finish up, say our final goodbyes, fix what is left to be fixed in the clinic and around the compound.  Then, we leave early in the morning on Wednesday.  It will be our last time for a long time to drive the horribly bumpy and rutted road that is the only way into the area.  The truck will be packed to the brim with four trunks, five bags, and a pack-n-play. We will be a sight to see, for sure.

Thank you to all our friends and family who have made our adventures in Honduras possible.  It is incredible that the two years has passed and that we are on our way to a new home.  We will continue to post updates (if anyone wants to read them) through our time of transition.  It will be very interesting to see how we do adjusting as a family to our new life in Hendersonville, NC and to a new addition to the family.

October 22

Today is the last day of the brigade.  Time is moving fast now.  We have met some great people who we hope will be good friends in NC.  We have said some goodbyes to Hondurans who we will not see again before we leave.  We had a goodbye party at the church hosted by the women of the church.  I have started packing up toys and things to give away.  We have cleaned out supplies, organized, and are getting ready for the next week of packing and goodbyes.  It is a sad time, really.  It is harder than I realized it would be.

October 11

Here we are at the beginning of the end.  Tomorrow afternoon the brigade arrives.  Their arrival marks the end of our stay in Honduras as we will pack up soon after they leave and depart for the airport ourselves.

Luke spent a delightful week and a half with Mimi.  They took walks everyday, sometimes twice a day, and often in the rain.  They splashed through the water and raced tupperware boats down rivers of rain water.  They sang and talked to every person and animal they passed.   They built roads for his cars, they danced to music, they read books, and they conversed in English.  In short, Luke had a great time with Mimi and frequently asks for her and about her since she left yesterday.  We love you, Mimi!  Thank you for coming to visit and to say goodbye to Santa Lucia.

October 1

So here we are into October.  We have 4 weeks left until we leave.  Every week passes by rapidly with full days in the clinic for Andy and lots of activities and friends for Luke and Laura.

Right now, we are so thankful to have Andy's mom Becky visiting us.  She will be here for a little over a week, playing with Luke, teaching him some English before we move, and playing with the kids in the library.

After Becky comes the brigade.  They will be here for about two weeks.  Brigades are always crazy-busy with lots of teaching, lots of questions, and lots of good discussions. The big group will divide into little groups to visit the surrounding aldeas and do Child Health Brigades.  About five trucks will be used everyday to transport people.  Some brigade members will stay behind everyday to see patients in the clinic and the pharmacy.  The brigade members will take call every night for the Santa Lucian doctors.  However, there are always a lot of questions, especially if there is no power, on where things are or how things are done.  So all the doctors stay busy.  Luke will entertain tables full of people at each meal and keep everyone laughing.  He LOVES having a crowd of new friends.  It will be fun to catch up with friends and make new ones.

Then, my parents come down to help us pack up and drive us to the airport.

Our month is going to fly by.
