December 18
The days fly by! No baby yet. The baby's room is done,
except for the quilt. The hospital bag is in the trunk of the
car, and the carseat is in the car. Luke got a baby in the mail
from Mimi to practice taking care of his own baby. We continue to
go for our weekly checkups to see how the baby is doing. All is
well.
Luke and I have established some kind of schedule for the week, which
is fun. Monday, we go grocery shopping. Tuesday is baby
checkup day and lunch with a friend. Wednesday is story time at
the library with lots of new friends. Thursday and Friday are
more up in the air; however, we always manage to fill them. These
days, there is always something to do or some errand to run.
After lunch and a nap, we head out with the stroller to pick up
the mail. It is a 1/4 mile walk to the mail box, one way.
We always look for interesting animals, trees, and trucks passing
by. With the warm weather we've been having, we can play outside
before getting dinner going. Andy is home around 5-5:30, and
dinner is at 6. After that, family time, bath time, and bed time
for Luke.
Today, we ended our search for the perfect sofa by finally making a
decision and buying one, along with a love seat and recliner. Our
living room will soon be complete, which will definitely help with the
settling-in process. We have bargain hunted and thrifted about
every spare weekend (or moment) for the furniture needed to fill all
these new rooms. We have been successful on many fronts.
Soon, I will get some pictures posted to show off our new home
and the beautiful land we live on.
Once the baby arrives, we will make sure to let friends and family know. Stay tuned.
December 2
Today we had our first real pregnancy checkup with a midwife who could
potentially deliver the baby if she is on call. I am 36-weeks and
counting. As many have said, "You could go any day now." I
guess I could, though the baby is still high up. We are hoping
for closer to the due date.
I am trying to get the baby's room ready. It has been stripped of
a wallpaper border (thanks, Mom!), painted (thanks, Andy and Mom), and
has the crib set up. I have purchased fabric to update the crib
bumper and some curtains. I have a plan for a tree wall
decoration involving canvases and fabric. The baby quilt has
stalled out but is ready for continued quilting.
Then, there is everything I need to wash in preparation for the baby . . .
Yes, I need all the time I can get.
Luke has a cold and had a particularly hard afternoon, especially with my appointment thrown in.
As I type, I am sitting by our toasty fireplace. A fireplace is a
wonderful luxury on a cold night. Our house has so many luxuries,
like a dishwasher, clothes washer and dryer, so many rooms we don't
know what to do with all of them, and two ovens! It is amazing to
me that we live here. As we continue to adjust to life here, I
don't want to take for granted all that we have been given just by
virtue of living in the US. One of the new luxuries is
"convenience". It now takes me six minutes to get to the grocery
store instead of six hours! Instead of filling a glass with clean
water from a filter every day to rinse my toothbrush, I can rinse it in
the tap water coming out of the faucet. Instead of making apple
pie crust from scratch, I can use a ready-made Pillsbury dough crust if
I choose to do so. Instead of importing fabric from the US to
make a quilt, I can drive to my local fabric store. The list goes
on and on. I just want to express that I am thankful for the many
conveniences that make life easier, though I learned a lot from the
absence of convenience.
I want to continue to remember my friends who live in Santa Lucia and
live day in and day out without the luxuries from which I am now
benefiting.
